A vacated furniture store in Lincoln Heights has been converted into
the Pop-Up Gallery for a show of paintings by production designer/painter Toby
Corbett. Corbett will be showing: Debbie is on the Phone, paintings based on a 1945 publicity still of
Debbie Reynolds; Bones,
paintings based on the skeletal remains found in Corbett's studio in Lincoln
Heights; Odysseus, paintings
based on the voyage of Odysseus; Debris, paintings based on a bike ride along the Thames. At the
University of Washington Corbett studied painting with Jacob Lawrence and film
studies with Richard Jameson. Corbett's skills as a painter led to his working
in major regional theatres as a scenic artist. After moving to New York City
Corbett began working as a set designer on numerous off-Broadway productions.
His work in the theatre led to a career as a production designer for film and
television. Corbett has worked with a distinguished group of filmmakers
including Kathryn Bigelow, Ron Nyswaner, Keifer Sutherland, Tracey Ullman, Jim
McBride, Wayne Kramer, John Sayles, and Werner Herzog.
Corbett's
work as a production designer is now also on view in the film Bad
Lieutenant:Port of Call New Orleans starring Nicolas Cage and
directed by Werner Herzog.
